How Often Should You See the Dentist If You Have Periodontal Disease?

Posted on 9/5/2022 by Todd Jorgenson
How Often Should You See the Dentist If You Have Periodontal Disease? If you have been diagnosed with periodontal disease, you may wonder how often you should see the dentist for treatment. This question can vary depending on the severity of your condition and the treatment plan your dentist recommends. Here are the factors which will determine the frequency.

The Severity of Your Condition

Periodontitis can cause several dental problems. These may include tooth loss, gum recession, bone loss, and bad breath. If you have any symptoms, you should see a dentist as soon as possible. Depending on the severity of the condition, you may need to see a periodontist. A periodontist is someone who understands the treatment of gum disease. They can provide you with the care you need to manage your condition. If you have mild periodontitis, you may only need to see a dentist for a cleaning and exam every three months. However, you may see a dentist or periodontist every month if you have severe periodontitis.

The Treatment Plan Your Dentist Recommends

There are different ways to treat periodontal disease, and the best approach for the severity of your condition will determine you. In some situations, a deep cleaning may be all that is necessary to remove the tartar and plaque from your teeth and gums. This medical procedure is usually done in two visits. During the first visit, your dentist or hygienist will clean above and below the gum line. It is done by scaling, which involves using an ultrasonic scaler or hand instruments to remove plaque and tartar from your teeth. Then, they will smooth out rough spots on your tooth's root where bacteria can hide. This process is called planing.

Your Lifestyle

You should see your dentist more frequently if you live a high-risk lifestyle. It includes people who smoke tobacco or use other drugs and those with certain medical conditions. Your experienced dentist can determine how often you should visit for appointments based on your needs.

Our dentists will assess your individual needs and recommend how often you should come in for appointments. Book an appointment today.
