The Difference in the Definition of Oral Surgery and Periodontal Surgery |
Posted on 6/20/2022 by Todd Jorgenson |
Oral surgery is any surgical process performed on the teeth, jaw, gums, and oral structures in the mouth. This procedure aims to treat gum diseases and damage caused to the gums. The procedures include implants, jaw surgeries, extraction, and gum grafts. The process is performed by an oral maxillofacial surgeon, while periodontal surgery is a procedure that treats conditions like periodontics and gingivitis.
The Reason Why this Procedure is Done.
Oral surgery can be performed to correct several dental issues; the dentist might recommend surgery if a patient has gum diseases, teeth that are badly broken and extensive tooth decay if a patient has impacted teeth. In the case of missing teeth, there is bone loss in the jaw due to temporomandibular joint diseases. Periodontal surgery is done to correct conditions like gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis is a gum disease that causes the gum to swell, redden and bleed. Gingivitis occurs due to poor oral health, while periodontitis is a severe form of gum disease where gingivitis is worse and has advanced, causing an inflammatory response that destroys tissues and the bone.
Types of Surgical Procedure in Both Cases
The type of surgery the periodontist will perform depends on the severity and the type of gum disease. Before the procedure, the surgeon can deep clean the teeth like scaling and root planing. Different surgical corrections can be performed to correct periodontitis like; flap surgery, grafting of the tissues, and guided tissue regeneration. The most common procedures performed in oral surgery include dental bone grafts, periodontal surgery, tooth extraction, cleft lip, and palate repair.
The Profession Who Performs this Process
Oral surgery is performed by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon who performs the procedure on the face, the jaw, and the mouth. A gum specialist performs the surgery on the bones and the gums that support teeth. At the same time, in periodontal surgery, a periodontist performs the surgery on the gums and can also offer services like root planning.
