Preventing Gum Disease Could Help Avoid Alzheimer's Disease

Posted on 5/23/2022 by Todd Jorgenson
Preventing Gum Disease Could Help Avoid Alzheimer's DiseaseOral hygiene plays a role in preventing Alzheimer's disease. This disease is among the most tragic. Although it can affect younger people, Alzheimer's most often occurs in elderly people. People fear the symptoms, which include a decline of memory and loss of motor function. In the late stages, patients can even forget their close friends and family. In recent times, researchers have identified a surprising connection between Alzheimer's and gum disease.

Gum Disease among the Elderly

Elderly people are more susceptible to gum disease because of the problems that come with aging. They may not strictly observe their oral hygiene routine and may skip seeing a dentist. Additionally, problems with mobility can impact how they perform their oral hygiene. Cognitive impairment may affect their oral hygiene.

Receding Gums in the Elderly

The gums naturally start to recede or shrink in later years, often creating a dangerous environment for the teeth. Healthy gums are an important defense for the lower areas of the tooth. When gums recede, the areas exposed become more sensitive. They also become less resistant to bacteria compared to those protected by the enamel. Although it might not be possible to stop the natural gum recession, there are treatments that may help correct it if it has progressed to an advanced stage.

Dry Mouth in the Elderly

Older adults tend to produce less saliva due to many reasons. Age alone can result in dryness. The glands are less active, meaning they release less saliva. Additionally, the elderly are susceptible to conditions that bring the effect of dry mouth. Stroke, diabetes, and other auto-immune conditions can disrupt how the salivary glands function. Medication used to treat some conditions can also lead to dry mouth. The lack of saliva in the mouth can cause more bacteria to build up because there is no natural cleansing of the mouth. This can, in turn, lead to gum disease.
