You Have Received Your Dental Implants: How do you Care for them?Once our periodontist installs dental implants to replace missing teeth, you have a responsibility to care for them. The success and number of years that dental implants last depend partly on how you take care of them and your oral hygiene practices and habits. Dental implants are a common treatment for replacing missing teeth. They can also aid to stabilize a denture to ensure comfort and function. The American Academy of Implant Dentistry says that more than 3 million people have received dental implants and the figures are growing by 500,000 every year. Here are ways you can take care of the restorations once you receive them.

Caring for Single or Multiple Implants

You need to schedule regular dental cleanings with our periodontic team. At home, ensure that you clean your gums and teeth at least two times every day using a soft-bristle toothbrush. Ensure that you use a low-abrasive toothpaste and brush around as well as underneath the implant crown. Moreover, floss once a day with unwaxed tape or look for implant-specific floss. Consider having an oral rinse that has no alcohol, at least two times a day.

Caring for Implant over Dentures

If you have dentures placed over implants, you need to consider cleaning the dentures daily. Soak them in a specified cleaner for the time our periodontist recommends. Make sure you inspect the attachment clips or caps and alert our dentist if they are missing or worn out. Use a denture brush to gently brush the underneath surface of the dentures. Also, rinse the overdenture with water before you place it into the mouth. Ensure you clean around the implant attachments or locators with a small brush to remove debris. Visiting our periodontist every 3 to 6 months is paramount to ensure the prosthetics are functioning properly.
