How To Prevent Periodontal Disease

Posted on 1/10/2022 by Todd Jorgenson
How To Prevent Periodontal DiseaseAlso known as gum disease, periodontal disease is an oral infection caused by bacteria. When plaque builds up around your gums and teeth, chances of developing this condition increase. Gum disease makes gums surrounding the affected tooth swell due to inflammation. If this condition is left untreated, it can lead to tooth loss. Luckily, there are several ways you can prevent periodontal disease.

Preventing Periodontal Disease

As mentioned earlier, there are several ways you can prevent and stop the development of periodontal disease. Brushing your teeth regularly is one way you can avoid this condition. You must brush your teeth after meals because it helps eliminate plaque and food particles trapped between your teeth. When we talk about brushing, most people only think of their teeth. You should brush every part of your mouth because bacteria could be anywhere. Remember to brush your tongue, the roof of your mouth, and underneath the tongue. These areas are prone to hosting bacteria, and leaving them unbrushed increases the risk of periodontal disease.

Apart from brushing, it would help if you also flossed your teeth. Just like brushing, flossing helps get rid of bacteria and plaque that could cause periodontal disease. This is why you should floss at least twice daily. Most people tend to ignore flossing because they think brushing gets the job done. This isn't right because brushing won't reach every part of your mouth. By flossing, you help get rid of stuck food particles that brushing might have missed.

Using mouthwash is also a reliable way of preventing periodontal disease. After eating, you should swish your mouth with a fluoride mouthwash to help remove food particles. Using mouthwash is essential because it helps eliminate plaque and food particles missed by brushing and flossing. Get in touch with us for more information on how to prevent periodontal disease.
