What are the Non-Surgical Treatments for Periodontal Disease? |
Posted on 12/10/2021 by Todd Jorgenson |
Periodontal disease is a severe oral condition that starts as gum disease. This condition is triggered by the presence of bacteria and stuck food particles in your mouth. If you don't treat gum disease on time, it advances to periodontal disease. Even though surgical procedures mainly treat periodontal disease, there are several non-surgical procedures you can opt for. Some of them include:
Scaling and Root Planing
Scaling and root planing is one of the non-surgical ways of treating periodontal disease. It is the careful cleaning of the root surfaces to get rid of calculus and plaque. This method helps remove plaque from deep periodontal pockets and smooth the tooth root to eliminate harmful bacteria. After performing scaling and root planing, we sometimes follow it up with adjunctive therapy such as systemic antibiotics or local antimicrobials. This helps enhance the procedure and ensure all bacteria are removed. In most cases, however, patients don't need further active treatment after scaling and root planing. You will only need maintenance therapy that helps sustain your oral health and speed up recovery.
Tray Delivery Systems
A tray delivery system mainly consists of a custom-fit tray created based on the impressions of your mouth. You use this tray at home to accurately deliver medications prescribed by our dentists. The FDA approved this method of treatment since it is similar to fluoride trays that were used to prevent and treat tooth decay. The tray delivery system is not very effective in treating periodontal disease, but it helps manage its symptoms. We only recommend this treatment method if the condition is in its early stages. If you have advanced periodontal disease, we apply complex treatment methods that help put the condition under control.
