What Periodontists Are and What Do They Do |
Posted on 11/22/2021 by Todd Jorgenson |
A periodontist generally refers to a specialist that can help prevent, diagnose, and treat gum disease. Apart from being an expert when it comes to gum disease, a periodontist is also a dentist who specializes in treating oral inflammation.
What Does a Periodontist Do to Treat Gum Disease?
Periodontists are highly skilled when it comes to the treatment of diseases affecting the gums and bones in your mouth. This is because we went through additional years of education and extensive training.
A periodontist will usually recommend non-surgical procedures to patients that have gingivitis or minor periodontal disease. A common example of a non-surgical periodontal treatment is scaling and root planing. Although surgical procedures are necessary and more effective in some cases, non-surgical procedures are less invasive. We may also suggest other non-surgical treatments like laser therapy, systematic antibiotics, and antimicrobials.
However, we may also recommend a different surgical procedure, such as bone grafts or gum grafts to you, especially if you suffer from an advanced case of periodontitis. Advanced periodontal disease is generally viewed as a more serious stage of gum disease since it causes severe damage to the gums and bones in your mouth. Apart from treating gum disease, we also have the role of providing you with all sorts of preventive dental services to help maintain the optimal health and the hygiene of your mouth.
If you suspect that you have gum disease, please consider a visit to our clinic as soon as possible. Many dentists may decide to refer you to our office if you need further treatment or professional help. Of course, you can also visit our office without the referral of your dentist. If you have any concerns or questions about periodontal care or any related dental issues, feel free to contact our office for more information.
