Alcohol Can Lead to Dryness of Your Gums

Posted on 9/6/2021 by Todd Jorgenson
Alcohol Can Lead to Dryness of Your GumsAlcohol can have harmful effects on your health. It is known to cause conditions like liver cancer and other chronic illnesses. However, most people don't know that alcohol can also significantly impact your oral health. Apart from damaging your teeth due to high acidic levels, alcohol can also lead to the dryness of the gums. Here is how alcohol leads to the dryness of your gums.

Alcohol and Dry Gums

According to several studies, drinking alcohol can change the rate of your salivary flow. Heavy alcohol drinkers are more affected because it reduces salivary secretion. This will lead to reduced saliva levels in the mouth, leading to a condition known as dry mouth or xerostomia. It is very common for people to complain about dry mouth after consuming alcohol. Studies also show that alcohol acts as a diuretic. This means that the body will experience a significant reduction in body fluids after drinking chronic alcohol. As a result, drinkers will often have a feeling of dehydration and increased thirst sensation. If you drink a lot of alcohol, you will often find yourself in a state of dehydration or experience a dry throat the next morning.

Xerostomia can negatively affect your overall health. This is because it significantly reduces saliva secretion. Keep in mind that saliva contains essential enzymes that help during digestion. Therefore, a decrease in saliva production affects digestion. Furthermore, dry mouth can cause complications with your oral health. When you have a dry mouth, you will have great discomfort and find it difficult to enjoy your favorite foods. This is why it is important to limit the consumption of alcohol. If you notice any signs of dry mouth, come to our offices for immediate care and treatment. Also, if you are unsure of the effects of alcohol on your oral health, feel free to contact our offices for detailed explanations.
