Reasons Why the Roof of Your Mouth May Be Hurting

Posted on 1/25/2021 by Todd Jorgenson
Reasons Why the Roof of Your Mouth May Be HurtingThere are several reasons why the roof of your mouth might hurt, and some are more serious than others. You should always come see us if you experience any new oral discomfort, especially if it does not resolve on its own within a few days. Here are some possible explanations for pain in the roof of your mouth.

Allergic Reaction

An allergic reaction to a food, medication, or other substance can trigger pain in the mouth, including the roof of the mouth. If your pain is accompanied by swelling or redness, you should seek medical attention immediately as a swollen palate can block your airway and make it very difficult to breathe.

Mouth Sore

Oral sores are quite common, and can have a variety of causes. Canker sores and cold sores can sometimes appear on the roof of your mouth. These sores are often caused by hormone changes, stress, or viruses. You can also develop a sore, blister, or burn on the roof of your mouth from very hot foods or beverages, spicy foods, or acidic foods.

Burning Mouth Syndrome

Burning mouth syndrome is a common but somewhat mysterious condition that presents as a painful, burning sensation in your mouth. Burning mouth syndrome can affect your tongue, lips, cheeks, gums, or the roof of your mouth. There is no proven cause, but it is believed to be linked to stress and hormone levels, and it is more common in women than in men. Burning mouth syndrome and other pain in the roof of your mouth can be exacerbated by chronic dry mouth due to alcoholism, tobacco use, or dehydration.

Mucoceles

If you have an injury such as a cut on the roof of your mouth, mucus can build up and form a cyst called a mucocele. Mucoceles usually resolve on their own without treatment, but large ones can sometimes be uncomfortable and require drainage.
Occasionally, pain or swelling in the roof of your mouth can be an indicator of a more serious condition like oral cancer. If the roof of your mouth hurts, call our office today so we can figure out what is causing your discomfort.
