Do Impacted Teeth Alter Your Gum Health? |
Posted on 12/21/2020 by Todd Jorgenson |
Impacted wisdom teeth can affect your oral gum health both in the long term and short term. Therefore, the teeth should be removed, as they can lead to unwanted crowding or infections.
How Impacted Wisdom Teeth Can Change the Health of the Gums
Wisdom teeth or the very back molars (third molars) are supposed to erupt between the ages of 17 and 25. If these teeth do not have enough room to come in, it usually is because they are blocked by other teeth. If they cannot erupt at all, they are referred to as being fully impacted. Whether they come in partially or not at all, impacted wisdom teeth may grow at an odd angle. For example, some teeth grow toward the back of the mouth, some look like they are “lying down” on x-rays, or some grow toward the teeth in front of them. Some of the teeth twist inside the gum while others may press on the jawbone. Partially erupted teeth are also difficult to clean. In turn, plaque and tartar build up, leading to gum infections.
Other Associated Oral Health Complaints
Because wisdom teeth, which are impacted, may grow in strange directions, you can also experience swelling around the jaw, recurring jaw pain, or difficulty opening your mouth. The gums may also become tender and bleed at the back of the mouth, or you may notice an unpleasant taste. In addition, the lymph nodes in the neck may swell or pericoronitis, an infection, may develop around partially erupted teeth. Your gums are more likely to bleed or swell, especially in the back of the mouth, if you don't have your impacted wisdom teeth removed. Wherever teeth are impacted this type of dental problem needs to be immediately reviewed.
