Can Reshaping Your Gums Provide Oral Health Benefits? |
Posted on 11/16/2020 by Todd Jorgenson |
Gum reshaping is often done to make a grin look less gummy or less toothy. While this procedure may appear to be a cosmetic application, it can also be done to improve a patient's oral health. For example, if receded gums are reshaped or contoured, it may be done to improve a patient's appearance as well as assist in anchoring the tooth and to prevent further bone loss. The following information will show why reshaping the gums often goes beyond cosmetics.
Improving Gum Health: How Reshaping the Gums Helps
While gum contouring or reshaping is defined as a cosmetic procedure, performed to change the shape of the gums, you cannot overlook its benefits from an oral health standpoint. We often use this procedure to remove excess gum tissue that is giving a patient a gummy smile or to restore the gingival tissue when too much of the teeth are exposed. If your gums cover too much or too little of your teeth, or appear to be uneven, you may be a good candidate for gum reshaping. Gum reshaping and gum contouring are considered the same thing. The tools are just different. While “contouring” is often done with a scalpel, the gums are frequently “reshaped” with a laser.
What Is the Reason for Reshaping or Contouring Your Gums?
If you wish to reshape your gums because of gum disease, your reason for the procedure should also involve advancing your oral health. Do you want to repair gum recession? If so, we will first examine your gums to see if they are diseased. Sometimes, recession may develop because a patient brushes too hard or because he or she is taking a prescription medicine that causes recession. Receding gums should be contoured or reshaped, as they place the health of your roots, teeth, and jawbone at risk for future periodontal problems.
