:How to Become A Good Candidate for Dental Implants |
Posted on 8/10/2020 by Todd Jorgenson |
If you really like the idea of getting dental implants, you have to make sure you are the right candidate. The following information will help you get a head start and meet your goal of a better, permanent smile.
Are You Already a Good Candidate?
A good candidate for dental implant surgery is conscientious about his or her dental care. That means he or she brushes at least twice daily and regularly flosses once each day. The patient should have enough bone in the jaw to support the implant, and the gums should be free of periodontal disease. If you do have gum disease, you will need to get it treated before we can accept you as an implant patient. Once you have the condition treated and you follow a routine practice of brushing and flossing, as you should, we can go on and discuss the implant process.
When is an Implant Procedure Advised?
We typically recommend getting an implant or implants if you need to have a single tooth replaced with a crown or you need to fill in a space that features several missing teeth. In this case, an implant-supported bridge may help. You may also need implants to replace all your natural teeth. This can be done by adding the implants and supporting it with a full bridge or a fixed denture. If you have a problem with the lack of bone in your jaw, we may recommend a sinus augmentation. This is done by raising the sinus floor and the bone for implant placement. We may also perform a ridge modification for bone issues. In this procedure, we lift the gum away from the ridge so we can find the defect. When found, that section of bone is filled with a bone-type material or bone.
