Impact of Gum Disease on Your Heart

Posted on 6/6/2022 by Todd Jorgenson
Impact of Gum Disease on Your HeartGum disease can have a severe impact on your heart health. It has been shown to maximize the risk of heart attack and stroke. If you are concerned about your oral health, it is crucial to prevent gum disease from occurring in the first place.

Link Between Gum Disease and Heart Health

Gum disease is a severe issue that can harm one's overall health. Gum disease and heart health have been linked in studies because both disorders have similar underlying risk factors. Poor dental hygiene, for example, can result in excessive plaque buildup around the teeth, causing gingivitis and, finally, full-blown periodontitis. This bacterial infection harms heart health by increasing inflammation throughout the body, raising blood pressure levels, and interfering with blood clotting. Additionally, people who struggle with diabetes or obesity are at an increased risk for developing gum disease, as these conditions are also linked to cardiovascular disease.

What Are the Preliminary Signs of a Gum Disease and When To See a Dentist?

The 1st stage of gum disease is gingivitis, marked by inflammation and excessive bleeding of the gums. A build-up of bacteria and plaque can cause it on the teeth, and it is essential to see a dentist if you notice these symptoms. If left untreated, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, a more severe form of gum disease. Periodontitis leads to tooth and bone loss, so it is crucial to get treatment as soon as possible. Some other early signs of gum disease include swollen, red, and tender gums; bleeding while brushing or flossing; and receding gums. When you experience any signs or symptoms, please see a dentist right away. Early treatment can help prevent the progression of gum disease.

Schedule an appointment with our dentist if you believe you are at risk for gum disease or are experiencing any symptoms. They will be able to analyze your oral health and devise a treatment plan tailored to your needs.
