Can Alcohol in Mouthwash Harm Your Gums?

Posted on 4/20/2020 by Todd Jorgenson
Can Alcohol in Mouthwash Harm Your Gums? Most of us have taken some time to figure out the right mouthwash to use at the store, only to realize there are a lot of options on those shelves. Which is the right one to use, you likely asked yourself. Some of the mouthwash options have alcohol in them, while others do not. If you opt for a mouthwash with alcohol, understand that it could lead to issues with your gums. The truth is, alcohol is not good for your body, including your mouth. The better option is finding a mouthwash that is both alcohol-free and antimicrobial. Here's why.

What Alcohol Does to Harm Your Gums

When you consume alcohol from anything, mouthwash included, you dry out any tissue the alcohol comes in contact with. The ability to quickly dry anything it touches is part of what makes alcohol such an efficient fuel. If you put it into your mouth, it could be killing off some of the bacteria. However, it could also be killing off the healthy, beneficial bacteria you want in your mouth and digestive tract. Instead, what you should look for is a mouthwash that has anti-microbial properties. This type of mouthwash kills off the bad bacteria without drying out your oral tissues. Plus, it also has the ability to kill off any harmful microbes in your mouth, leaving it healthier after you use it. Make sure you are taking good care of your mouth, especially your gums. It does not take a lot of effort. Brush two times each day, and make sure to floss one of them. Use the best quality mouthwash you can find without alcohol. Get a cleaning every six months, and any time you see or feel an issue with your gums, call us. We can help make sure your mouth stays as healthy as possible for the rest of your life.
