You Could Get Healthier Gums with the Help of Lasers

Posted on 2/20/2020 by Todd Jorgenson
You Could Get Healthier Gums with the Help of LasersWhen you think about the tools used in dentistry, you probably think about drills, picks, and other types of hand tools.

Thanks to technological advances, though, we often make use of tools such as lasers to help remove bacteria from your mouth and repair damage it does. In fact, one of the newest and best ways of treating periodontal disease involves lasers.

How Lasers Can Make Your Gums Healthier

Many people are affected by periodontal disease for a number of reasons. Generally, we treat this disease by using scaling and root planing. This is a type of nonsurgical treatment that removes the bacteria and plaque from your teeth, including the roots.

While we may still need to do this, we can then follow up scaling and root planing with a laser treatment. This treatment will help your gums heal more quickly. It can preserve damaged tissue, help it regenerate, and even help your jaw rebuild bone.

Lasers can even be used in place of scaling and root planing in some circumstances. These lasers are able to kill bacteria and infected tissue. Lasers can also help the gums seal themselves up around the roots of your teeth, eliminated periodontal pockets that easily fill with bacteria.

The Benefits of Laser Gum Treatment

There are a number of reasons why we prefer to use lasers now whenever we can. They don't cause as much bleeding as other tools do, so they don't hurt your gums as much. They also allow us to create more customized treatment plans. We can set the laser's power and other functions, giving us more control over your treatment. Laser treatments typically have a shorter healing time, too, because they're much less invasive.

Want to learn more about how we can help keep your gums healthier via laser treatment? Ask us about it next time you're in, or call today to make an appointment.
