If you have been told that you might need to consider crown lengthening, there are some things to know about the process. First, you need to know what crown lengthening actually is, as the name can be a bit misleading.
Second, it helps to understand those people who are most benefited from the process in order to determine whether you should have it done yourself.
What is Crown Lengthening?Crown lengthening does not actually mean that you are making your tooth longer. Instead, it means that you are making the tooth appear longer by means of having superficial gum tissue trimmed away. In some cases, it is even necessary to shave away some of the bone beneath the gum tissue. Some people who have a “gummy” smile may feel that they have too much gum and not enough tooth showing. In this type of a situation, crown lengthening can be helpful.
Who Gets the Most Benefit from Crown Lengthening?Aside from people with especially “gummy” smiles, crown lengthening can help as part of the process to prepare for the installation of a dental crown. As you know, a dental crown is a cap that is placed over your existing tooth. This can be done for a number of reasons but is usually used in situations where the tooth has suffered some sort of damage.
Before a dental crown can be installed, you have to have a certain amount of tooth exposed to which the crown can be affixed. If you do not have enough tooth, it can be very helpful to undergo the crown lengthening process in order to provide enough tooth area for the cap.
