Does Gum Disease Treatment Require Antibiotic Medication?

 Gum disease treatment can be simple to complex depending on the severity of a person's gum disease. Since gum disease is caused by a bacterial infection in the gums, antibiotics can be effective at treating it.
Antibiotics can be used as one method to stop gum disease at the early stages, however, if the gum disease is advanced, it may be necessary to take other steps before implementing them.
Steps to Curing Gum DiseaseCuring more advanced stages of gum disease starts will fully cleaning the oral cavity. There are many methods to clean the teeth and gums from bacteria, and depending on the affected areas, the cleaning method can change. The most common cleaning technique is simply scraping the stuck-on plaque and tartar off the surfaces of the teeth and gums.
However, this method may not be able to clean all areas thoroughly. In some cases, gum disease has advanced far enough to decay the teeth and cause serious infection. When this happens, other methods such as scaling and root-planing need to be used. For these methods, we will use more invasive cleaning tools to remove built up bacteria. Generally, this is done under a local anesthetic so that it is a painless procedure.
After the teeth are cleaned, we will prescribe an antibiotic to completely kill any infection that is currently in the mouth and to prevent further infection from occurring. An antibiotic will also be used if the gums underwent surgery to aid the healing process of damaged material.
