Types of Periodontal Grafts

Posted on 7/10/2019 by Todd Jorgenson
Types of Periodontal GraftsReceding gums happen to almost everyone. The reasons for receding gums include aging and gum disease. Treatments for receding gums varies, but when the gaps and spaces between the gums becomes too large, gum grafts may offer the best solution.

There are different types of gum grafts. They all have some similarities, but they also differ. Learning the different types of gum grafts helps people see what their options are.

Four Types of Grafts

All periodontal grafts have the same goal. They all add tissue to the gums to help cover the exposed teeth and roots. They cover the gaps and spaces that form. They all require some type of tissue stitched to the gums. This allows the graft to attach itself to the gums and to help grow more healthy tissue. They differ in where they get the tissue from.

The four types of grafts are:

•  Connective Tissue Grafts - These are the most common type of periodontal grafts. It uses a flap cut into the roof of the mouth. Once the flap is cut, the oral surgeon takes soft connective tissue from under the flap. The surgeon then sutures the harvested tissue to the gums.
•  Free Gingival Grafts - This goes after the tissue from the same spot as the connective tissue grafts. Instead of cutting a flap in the palate, the tissue comes directly from the roof of the mouth.
•  Pedicle Grafts - This type of graft uses tissue from the gum at or around the tooth where the graft is needed. It involves cutting a flap in the gum tissue and pulling it down to cover the exposed root. It is then stitched into place.
•  Allograft - This type of graft relies on donated tissue from an outside source. Sutures hold the donated tissues in place.

Periodontal grafts are an effective way to treat receding gums. The key to the success of any type of periodontal graft is the aftercare a person gives it. That gives the graft the best chance of taking root and turning into healthy, new gum tissue.
