Are There Foods You Can Eat to Improve Your Gum Health?

Are There Foods You Can Eat to Improve Your Gum Health?Maintaining and improving the health of your gum tissue can not only prevent the development of periodontal disease, it can ensure that you keep your teeth longer. Our gums are the cement of our mouths, holding everything in place and keeping everything in line. Keeping them healthy is imperative for good oral health.

Eating For Oral Health

If you have been diagnosed with gum disease, or if you are at risk for developing it, there are some foods you can eat that can potentially decrease your risks and improve your gum health.

When your mother told you to eat your vegetables, she was right, they're good for you! Broccoli, red and green peppers are all high in vitamin C which acts as an antioxidant in your body. Vitamin C has been shown to help reduce the risk of gum disease. Mushrooms, sweet potatoes and leafy greens should also be included regularly in your diet. Not only do they have high fiber content, they require additional chewing and believe it or not, that motion also aids in keeping your gums healthy.

If you are looking to increase the antioxidants in your diet, try drinking green tea. It can help reduce inflammation in the body and it contains catechins which help the gums fight inflammation that is caused by oral bacteria.

Fruits and vegetables that are crunchy are also an excellent tool in preventing gum disease and improving your gum health. They scrape away the stuck-on food, plaque and bacteria. Not only that, but they help increase your saliva flow, which is excellent for flushing out the mouth and getting the bacteria away from the gum line.

If you have any questions or concerns about your gum health, or your overall oral health, please call our office and schedule a check-up. We look forward to hearing from you.
