If you have come to us for a dental cleaning, we will likely recommend a process known as scaling and root planing. This process helps combat the progression of gum disease and encourages a smile that is healthy and strong. Here is more information about what you can expect when you come to us for scaling and root planing.
The Reason for Scaling and PlaningTo understand the process, you first have to understand the way gum disease can develop. When you brush your teeth, even if you do a great job, you simply cannot reach certain areas of the tooth. Between the teeth is an obvious spot, but another, even more troublesome area is the part of the tooth that is below the gum line.
Just because the tooth is below the gum line does not mean that plaque cannot develop there. In fact, it is in the area below the gum line where our patients develop the biggest plaque deposits. In order to reach these deposits, we use specialized tools to reach below the gum line and scrape the tooth clean. This is the process of scaling and planing.
The Benefits of Scaling and PlaningWithout scaling and planing, you will develop plaque and tartar deposits that will not be affected by your regular dental hygiene routine. In the short term this can lead to issues such as gum tenderness and inflammation, persistent bad breath, and discomfort in the gum and teeth. In the long term it could lead to tooth loss and other health issues.
Because it is so important to keep your teeth clean below the gum line, when you undergo scaling and planing you reap the benefits of better oral health. These include healthy teeth and overall better health. So, if you haven't seen us for 6 months or longer, or if you suspect you may have the beginning stages of gum disease, come see us today!
