How Do Your Gums Get Prepared for Dental Implant Surgery?

Posted on 2/20/2019 by Todd Jorgenson
How Do Your Gums Get Prepared for Dental Implant Surgery?Dental implants are a popular way to fix the problems people have with their teeth. It is one of the best ways to replace broken, chipped or lost teeth. The results of dental impact are a better smile and more functional teeth. Dental implants do require some preparation to the gums. What to do depends on several factors.

How Dental Implants Work

A dental implant permanently replaces a tooth or teeth. The implant is actually a small post inserted into the jawbone where the tooth is missing. A crown is then secured over the post. The bone grows back around the implant to hold it securely. The dental implant is not removed like dentures.

Preparing the Gums
When a tooth breaks, chips or falls out, the gum tissue is also impacted. The damage to the tooth can cause the loss of gum tissue. For a dental implant to work, it needs a sufficient amount of gum tissue. Some people will need to have treatments that help build up the gum tissue before the surgery.

There are other steps to take before undergoing dental implant surgery. An antibiotic risen can help remove any bacteria that is around the gums and around the area for an implant. It is possible to also take an oral antibiotic a few days before the procedure to reduce the amount of bacteria.

Because there is an incision in the gum tissue to put the implant in, the threat of bacteria is real, and it is important to minimize the amount of bacteria surrounding the surgery site.

If the loss of a tooth is related to gum disease, it is important to treat that before getting the implants. The gum disease makes dental implants riskier because of the presence of bacteria. Once the gums are healthier, the implant surgery becomes possible.
