How to Keep Inflammation of the Gums Down at HomeThere are many different causes for inflamed gums. If you suffer from this problem, you should schedule an appointment with our dental professionals to determine the reason behind the inflammation.

Until you see a dental professional, there are some things you can do to help manage the issues that surround the inflamed gums. Learning what to do can make it easier to make it until you see our professionals.

Causes of Inflamed Gums

The most common reasons for inflamed gums is gum disease. Gum disease is the result of a buildup of plaque on the gums. The plaque allows bacteria to get into the gums and lead to an infection. The inflammation is a sign of the infection and is something to address. Some of the other reasons for inflamed gums are things that are easy to correct.

•  Brushing too hard can irritate the gums and can cause them to end up inflamed
•  Food stuck between the teeth and gums causes inflammation
•  Hormonal changes can lead to inflammation

While you wait to see if these or some other reason is behind the inflammation, these tricks can help you keep the inflammation down.

•  Switch to a softer toothbrush
•  Floss to remove any food stuck between the teeth and gums
•  Drink lots of water
•  Avoid foods high in acids and sugar
•  Avoid caffeine
•  Reduce the stress

There are also over the counter medications that provide temporary relief. It is important not to ignore the inflammation. Even if it goes away, it is a good idea to visit our dental professionals to make sure that the problem is not serious. Many times, the sooner you start treatment, the easier it is to solve the problem.

Don't wait until the inflammation turns into pain. Contact our dental office today to schedule an appointment for any problems you have or for a regular visit.
