What to Know About Oil Pulling Before You Try It

Posted on 10/20/2018 by Todd Jorgenson
What to Know About Oil Pulling Before You Try ItHome remedies are often popular. People like the idea that they can do something for their health without going to the doctor. This is especially true when it comes to oral health issues. People find reasons to avoid going to the dentist and if they find out about some type of home remedy that allows this, they will try it.

One home remedy people use for their oral health is oil pulling. Like any other home remedy, you should learn what it is, what it does and what it does not do before trying it.

What is Oil Pulling

Oil pulling is something that is a part of your regular oral health routine. It involves using some type of oil mixed with water. Coconut oil and peppermint oil are popular choices. You drink the oil mixture and hold it in your mouth.

After swishing the mixture around the mouth for about a minute, you spit it out. This is something that is typically done once a day.

What Does Oil Pulling Do

There are many different thoughts about what oil pulling can do. Some think it works miracles. Most people are more realistic. The oil can help kill and remove the bacteria that grow on the teeth and gums. By holding in your mouth for a minute, it can seep into the gaps and spaces around the teeth and gums.

When you remove the bacteria from the teeth and gums, they stay healthier. It can also help reduce the amount of time to recover after treatment for gum disease.

What it Does Not Do
Removing bacteria sounds like a good thing, and it is. As important as learning what oil pulling does, it is just as important to know what it does not do. Oil pulling is only one part of a good oral hygiene routine. It does not replace brushing and flossing or regular checkups with our dental professionals.

It can help reduce the effect of gum disease, but it does not always cure gum disease. It is still important to follow the rest of your oral health routines when you include oil pulling.
