The Most Common Types of Grafts You May Need Following Gum Disease Treatment

Posted on 6/25/2018 by Todd Jorgenson
Gum Disease East Valley Implant & Periodontal Center AZ 85204Treating gum disease is an important step towards regaining good oral health. It is also important to think about what happens after the treatment for gum disease.

Many will require some type of graft to help them regain the look they want. There are several types of graft that are common after the treatment for gum disease. It is a good idea to know what they are and how they will help.

Understanding the Grafts

The goal of gum grafts is to cover the exposed root surface. Root surfaces become exposed for various reasons, including gum disease, gingival recession and aggressive brushing and flossing. Grafted tissue can repair the damage that occurs. It is a surgical procedure done in our office. People turn to gum grafts to improve their appearance to reduce sensitivity and to improve their gum health.
The three most common types of gum graft are:

•  Free gingival graft - The procedure takes tissue from the palate to cover the areas affected by gum recession. It helps thicken the gum tissue.
•  Subepithelial connective tissue graft - This procedure takes tissue from the outer layer of the palate to cover the areas exposed by gum recession. This procedure covers the exposed roots.
•  Acellular dermal matrix allograft - Donated tissue replaces the need for taking tissue from the palate to help with issues related to gum recession.

No matter what the type of graft procedure used, there are some things to do first. The teeth and gums need a thorough cleaning. We provide information about the homecare for the graft. The procedure uses a local anesthetic and is not a painful procedure. Grafting takes about 6 weeks to completely heal

If you think you are a candidate for a gum graft, please feel free to contact our offices. We will provide you with the information needed about this or any other dental procedures you have an interest in.
