When you seek out treatment for an abscess, you need to realize just how serious of a condition you are trying to treat. An abscess is an area of infected bacteria somewhere in or around the base of a tooth, which can then lead to a larger infection in the rest of your body.
The pain of an abscess is indescribable, and the danger of leaving it untreated is great. It can become an infection in your bloodstream, which could then infect your brain, your heart, or your entire body.
Treating a Dental AbscessHow an abscess is treated depends on the reason the abscess formed in the first place. If the abscess is from a cavity near the root of the tooth that got bacteria stuck in an enclosed space, a root canal is the ideal way to treat your abscess. However, if the abscess comes from a decaying tooth that cannot be salvaged, then the tooth is going to need to come out.
You should also know that no matter which route you take, the abscess is going to need to be drained. The pus from the wound is going to have to come out, and the area will need treatment to prevent spread of the bacteria. This can often be done with antibiotics, but again, it depends on the abscess itself.
The hardest part of the entire thing for many patients is that we may not know much before we get in there and see the condition of the area around the abscess. We can do x-rays and scans, but the best visual we can get is the one we see once we get the process started.
