Making Periodontal Visits Less Painful

Posted on 11/13/2016 by Todd Jorgenson
A patient talking with her dentist about reducing pain during treatments.
Any time you visit us, you may be feeling a twinge of fear at the prospect. The good news is that by taking a few steps you can minimize any discomfort and make the process go more smoothly.

Do Dot Self-Medicate Before Your Visit
We know this may sound odd to you, but some people are so nervous about visiting the dentist that they will take anxiety medications beforehand. If you have taken Xanax or Valium before coming to see us-or, worse yet, if you have been drinking to try to calm your nerves-then by the time we see you, your body is full of chemicals.

This can complicate our work and can even prevent us from administering certain medications out of fear of how they will interact with what you have already taken!

Make Sure You Are Doing Your Part At Home
One reason that some visits to the dentist may be painful is that the patient has not been performing proper oral hygiene at home. If you have not flossed your teeth since the last time we saw you, your gums will be much more tender when we do it. On the other hand, if you're flossing regularly, you won't even notice as we do it. Do your part at home, and your dentist will do his part at the office to help make things go more smoothly.

Talk To Your Dentist

Believe it or not, dentists are people, too! We know what it feels like to be nervous and afraid. If you're struggling, just let your dentist know and they can do their best to make your visit as easy and painless as possible. Your dentist will work hard to help make your visit an enjoyable one, and address any anxiety or other issues you may be having.

Please contact us if you have any questions about your oral health.
