Gum Recontouring: What is It?

Posted on 9/15/2015 by Todd Jorgenson
A woman covering her mouth, because she's suffering from a gummy smile. If you are worried about the appearance of your smile, our dental office may be able to help fix this issue with gum recontouring. People who have well-proportioned gums can showcase their beautiful smile. On the other hand, if your gums are set too high or resting too low on your teeth, this can make you look unattractive.

Do not be afraid to reshape that gummy smile because this procedure can help improve your overall appearance. Gum recontouring is a dental treatment that specialists use to reshape or sculpt the gum tissue inside of the mouth. This is primarily a cosmetic procedure and it can be used to repair uneven gum lines. As an added bonus, it can be performed right inside of our dental office.

Are You a Good Candidate?
People who have uneven gum lines, a gummy smile or experience gum recession may be ideal candidates for this procedure. Many things can cause your gum line to set too high or too low. It can be due to health problems, taking prescription medication or pure genetics. These kinds of dental problems can make your teeth look too small or too big.

Gum recession occurs when the gum tissue is pulled back from a tooth, exposing the root of a tooth. If this issue is not addressed, it can result in tooth loss and sensitivity to hot and cold foods and liquids. This surgery can help you achieve the best long-term results.

What Should You Expect?
One of our dentists will perform a routine exam and go over what treatment options are best for you. Before surgery, he or she will let you know what to expect, if your gum tissue needs to be removed and how your gum line will be reshaped. Our professionals may use special instruments to trim off the excess gum tissue or bone that may be causing this problem. Moreover, reshaping your uneven gum line may require one of our experts to add tissue to areas where there is too little.

Recovery Time
Before you go to surgery, get plenty of rest and limit your activities. After the procedure is over, it may take your gums a few days or weeks to heal. Our dentist will give you special instructions about what to do, so you can make a speedy recovery. Here are a few easy steps to follow to help you make it through the recovery phase. If you are experiencing pain after the surgery, take some over-the-counter medication such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen.

Please avoid using aspirin because it may cause excessive bleeding. You should not eat hard food because it may cause lots of pain and discomfort. Rather, eat soft foods such as yogurt, eggs, bread, cottage cheese, soft vegetables, and ice cream. Consume these items for the next couple of days to allow your gums time to heal. Spicy foods or fruits with seeds may irritate your gums.

Furthermore, our dentist will give you guidance on how to brush your teeth. If you experience excessive swelling or bleeding of the gums, please contact our office immediately for assistance. This procedure is not mandatory, but is primarily for aesthetics. To the contrary, some people need gum recontouring because it is a requirement, so that we can perform other periodontal procedures such as pocket reduction, crown lengthening, and restorative treatments.

It is also considered to be a necessary surgery when tissue needs to be added due to a receding gum line or cutting down overgrown tissue that covers part of a crown. Our general dentists and periodontists can perform this surgery because they have experience and knowledge about this process.

If you feel unattractive and dissatisfied with your smile, you may be a perfect candidate for gum recontouring. Remember that one of our experts can help you correct this dental problem. We want you to be happy with your quality of life and personal appearance. Please contact our office today and schedule an appointment. Do not let your misshapen gum line get in the way, restore that beautiful smile today.
