Repairing Your Overall Health After Gum Disease

Posted on 8/25/2015 by Todd Jorgenson
A toothbrush with toothpaste on it.Gum disease can have a great impact on your overall health. The more progressive the disease the greater the impact it has on your overall health. Now that you have taken steps to correct the disease, you can begin repairing the damage that was caused. The best way to do that is to work with your dentist closely to find the best treatment.

Maintain Good Oral Health

The best way to repair overall health is to prevent the return of gum disease. Regular flossing, brushing and using mouthwash are steps that can be taken at home to reduce the risk of gum disease returning. The other component is keeping up with regular teeth cleanings and dental checkups to remove any tartar build up. It is easier and less costly to fix a small issue than complications later down the road.

Restoration Surgeries

If gum disease has caused tooth loss and bone loss, a graft procedure might help tissue to regenerate. Flap surgery is to remove deep pockets in the gums or excessive inflammation. Having dental implants can prevent further damage. Improving your facial appearance can make a huge difference in how you feel about yourself which impacts your overall health. If you feel better about yourself, you are more likely to take better care of yourself.

Oral Health Concerns

Since gum disease is most often caused by improper caring for teeth and poor eating habits, improving these basic self-care habits can repair your overall health:

•  Eat foods with less refined sugar and less acidic
•  If you only floss once a day, floss at night
•  Drink more water and less soda or juice
•  Exercise
•  Use mouthwash on a daily basis, preferably before bed
•  Consult with other specialists if you developed an additional health concern, such as heart disease or diabetes
