Home Remedies That Can Help During Gum Disease Treatment

Posted on 11/3/2025 by Todd Jorgenson
Woman sleeping on a cloud. Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is a common infection that affects the gums and bones supporting your teeth. If left untreated, it can lead to tooth loss and other serious health problems. Fortunately, there are many things you can do at home to support your treatment and improve your oral health.

Rest and Relaxation

When you're going through gum disease treatment, it's important to give your body time to heal. This means getting enough sleep, eating a healthy diet, and avoiding stress. Stress can weaken your immune system, making it harder for your body to fight off infection.

Oral Hygiene

Good oral hygiene is essential for preventing and treating gum disease. This includes brushing your teeth twice a day, flossing once a day, and using an antiseptic mouthwash. You should also see your dentist for regular checkups and cleanings.

Saltwater Rinse

A saltwater rinse is a simple and effective way to reduce inflammation and pain in the gums. To make a saltwater rinse, dissolve 1/2 teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water. Rinse your mouth with the solution for 30 seconds, then spit it out. You can do this several times a day.

Warm Compress

A warm compress can help to reduce swelling and discomfort in the gums. To make a warm compress, soak a clean washcloth in warm water and apply it to the affected area for 10-15 minutes.

Yogurt

Yogurt is a good source of probiotics, which are beneficial bacteria that can help to improve oral health. Choose plain yogurt with no added sugar. You can eat yogurt as a snack or use it as a base for a healthy smoothie.

Green Tea

Green tea contains antioxidants that can help to protect your gums from damage. It also has anti-inflammatory properties. You can drink green tea hot or cold.

Oil Pulling

Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic practice that involves swishing oil in your mouth for 15-20 minutes. This is thought to help remove toxins and bacteria from the mouth. Use organic coconut oil or sesame oil for oil pulling.

Quit Smoking

Smoking is a major risk factor for gum disease. It weakens your immune system and makes it harder for your body to fight off infection. If you smoke, quitting is the best thing you can do for your oral health.

See Your Dentist Regularly

Even if you're using home remedies, it's important to see your dentist regularly for checkups and cleanings. Your dentist can monitor your progress, provide additional treatment if needed, and answer any questions you have.

By following these tips, you can help to improve your oral health and make your gum disease treatment more successful. Remember, home remedies should be used in conjunction with professional dental care, not as a replacement for it.
