Who Is More Likely To Develop Gum Disease?

Posted on 1/15/2024 by Weo Admin

Many things are associated with gum disease development, including genetics, lifestyle choices, and oral hygiene habits. Knowing what influences your chances of getting periodontal disease can empower you to take measures to prevent it. Here are factors that will determine if you can suffer from periodontal disease:

Poor Oral Hygiene Practices

Not everyone is able to maintain rigorous oral hygiene practices like daily brushing their teeth two times and flossing at least once. If you are this kind of person, you should worry about your oral health.

Make all efforts to ensure you are doing your job in brushing and flossing. Additionally, keep your promises for visiting the dentist regularly. Those routine dental checks can help catch and stop gum inflammation, which precedes periodontal disease.

Bad Lifestyle Choices

If you are fond of consuming sugary items, you risk developing gum infection. Beverages such as sports drinks and sodas contain high sugar amounts and acid, both of which can harm the gums and teeth.

Bacteria present in plaque feed on sugar, converting it into acid, thus leading to gum disease and enamel erosion. Similarly, if you smoke, you can struggle with a dry mouth which can contribute to a buildup of bacteria within the oral cavity. Smoking also increases tartar on teeth, which also is linked to gum disease formation.

Old Age

Aged individuals are more prone to disease, including gum infections. Receding gums are prevalent in older people. As the gums pull away, they expose the tooth root. As such, bacteria make their way into the pockets, causing inflammation and decay.

Again, older people produce less saliva, therefore, much bacteria and food debris are not washed away adequately by the saliva, causing dangers for gum disease. Contact our periodontal team to have your gum and teeth health checked.
