Is Gingivitis or Gum Disease Contagious?

Posted on 12/15/2023 by Weo Admin
a close up of healthy gums and pearly teethMany people will ask whether it is possible to contract or get gum disease from another person. It is understandable for people to believe that they can catch gum disease from habits like kissing and sharing drinks. And, of course, they are correct, because gingivitis is actually contagious. So, let's look at what happens when you have gingivitis or gum disease.

What is Gingivitis?

It is simply an inflammation of the gums. Gingivitis is the start of more progressive gum disease or periodontal disease. If you do not have it treated, the periodontal disease evolves into periodontitis, an inflammation of the teeth's supporting structures. Such further inflammation leads to loosened teeth and bad breath, and could additionally contribute to chronic diseases like hypertension and diabetes.

How Can Gingivitis be Passed on to Other People?

To many, they will be surprised to find that gingivitis can be passed to other individuals. The bacteria found in plaque is responsible for causing gingivitis. Like all other bacteria, the gingivitis-causing bacteria are able to get from one individual to another.

As such, gingivitis is truly a contagious disease. Anyone who gets in contact with a person having plaque, poor oral hygiene, or gingivitis, can contract gingivitis. It affects adults and kids alike.

Can You get Gingivitis from Kissing?

Also, the odds of getting gingivitis-causing bacteria from kissing are low, it does mean you cannot contract the bacteria. If you kiss someone with gingivitis, they will spread the bacteria to your mouth, and you could start developing gingivitis.

Think of the reason why gingivitis and cavities are common in kids. The most common route for kids catching gingivitis is because their parents spread the bacteria through kissing. If you have gingivitis, refrain from kissing your baby, loved one, or partner. Again, do not share toothbrushes with family or friends.

Always embrace proper oral hygiene and see a dentist often. Contact us and our periodontist will check your mouth and gum tissue for infection. We can treat your gingivitis and reverse it.
