Have you been worried about your next dental visit? If you have periodontal disease, it is understandable that you are worried. However, you need to know that when you visit a dentist or a periodontist, the goal is to improve your dental health. Here is some information about your teeth and gums that any dentist needs to know.
Be Honest About Your Habits
People aren't always completely honest with their doctors or dentists. In fact, research indicates between 60 and 80 percent of all patients aren't always honest with their medical providers. When you visit the dentist, especially if you have periodontal disease, you need to be honest about your diet, brushing and flossing habits, and medications you are taking. If you are honest with your dentist, they can provide you with a treatment plan tailored to your habits.
Be Sure and Ask About Periodontal Disease
There's a big difference between the stages of periodontal disease, and you need to understand if you have gum disease and what stage you are in. If you are in stage one, called gingivitis, you may notice that your gums are red and swollen. Another tell-tale sign of gingivitis is bleeding gums, especially after brushing and flossing. If you have gingivitis, you and your dentist working together can develop a treatment plan to cure it with no damage to your gums.
What About Stages Two and Three? If you have stages two and three, your gum disease is called periodontitis. When you have periodontitis, you have gum damage that cannot be cured, but it can be managed. If you have gum disease, in stage two or three, you may notice that you have bad breath. You might also notice that your teeth look larger because your gums are receding. You might also have spaces, or pockets, between your teeth and gums.
Once the dentist knows what stage of periodontitis you have, they can begin a treatment plan with your help. With a deep cleaning and proper dental hygiene, you'll be able to keep smiling for years to come.
