What Is The Link Between Periodontal Disease And Other Health Conditions?
Posted on 6/19/2023 by Todd Jorgenson
Periodontal disease is the infection and inflammation of your gum tissues. It is mostly caused by poor dental practices. If you don't brush your teeth tartar and plaque will accumulate in the teeth and gum tissues. According to studies, bacteria linked to periodontal disease can spread to other body parts leading to other health conditions. Here is a link between advanced gum disease to different health conditions:
Cardiovascular Disease
Advanced gum disease leads to chronic inflammation. Over time it will lead to the production of harmful chemicals. Chemicals such as the C-reactive proteins are notorious for causing heart problems. These chemicals can also damage the heart's blood vessels. It increases the risk of narrowing and hardening the heart's arteries. The bacteria in your mouth may also travel through the bloodstream and reach the heart. This type of bacteria may damage the valves or ventricles of your heart.
Diabetes
If you have diabetes you are more likely to get advanced gum disease. This is because you have poor circulation and a weak immune system. These factors can put you at risk of inflammation which can lead to insulin resistance. Over time it can lead to type 2 diabetes. Thus, it is important to always manage high blood sugar levels.
Respiratory Disease
Periodontal disease may lead to common respiratory disorders such as pneumonia. Harmful bacteria that cause gum disease can be inhaled into your lungs, leading to infection. Chronic inflammation common in periodontitis can make you susceptible to COPD.
Pregnancy Complications
Pregnant mothers with periodontitis are at great risk of low-birth-weight infants or experiencing premature birth. Inflammation linked to advanced gum disease may produce prostaglandins, which may induce labor, leading to premature births. All women must be treated for gum disease to prevent such complications. Oral hygiene and dental check-ups protect mothers and unborn babies from these effects.
