How Bad Breath Can Point Out to Specific Oral Issues |
Posted on 5/8/2023 by Todd Jorgenson |
Sometimes we know it, but nobody likes to hear someone else say that we have bad breath. The thought of someone catching a waft of your foul oral smell can be very embarrassing at times, not to mention tough for those around you. However, if people do not mention it, your bad breath can eventually qualify to peel off paint.
Also known as halitosis, an estimated 25% of people are affected by bad breath. Although halitosis can lead to significant embarrassment, worry, and anxiety, it is quite easy to deal with. Anyone has the potential to suffer from bad breath. Do not beat yourself up too much.
Bad Breath and Oral Issues
Statistics show that an oral issue propels more than three-quarters of bad breath cases. For example, gum disease and cavities can lead to bad breath. When plaque present in the teeth builds up, gum disease forms. If you have dental appliances that are a loose fit, they may be the cause of your foul smell. Having clean and well-fitted dental appliances is very important for your oral health.
Xerostomia (dry mouth) can also cause bad breath. Saliva is of utmost importance when it comes to moisturizing the mouth and removing plaque-produced acids. Saliva also washes away accumulated dead cells on the gums, cheek, and tongue. Continuous mouth breathing, medication, or issues with the salivary glands can cause xerostomia. Diseases such as diabetes, bronchitis, a sinus infection, acid reflux, and kidney problems may cause bad breath too.
Preventing Bad Breath
The constant practice of good oral hygiene can save you from a lot of embarrassment. Brushing your teeth twice daily and flossing can go a long mile in protecting your dental integrity. Moreover, make sure to drink a lot of water and visit us at least twice a year for a professional oral exam.
