How Long Do Dental Implants Last? |
Posted on 2/20/2023 by Todd Jorgenson |
It's understandable if you're having difficulty choosing how to replace your missing teeth because there are so many options. After evaluating all the factors, you're probably thinking about the complexity, cost, and even durability of each therapy, especially dental implants. You could be surprised by how much your investment will be worth in the long run.
What Dental Implants Consist Of?
Dental implants are made up of three parts: the implant, the abutment, and the restoration. These titanium implant posts, which mimic screws, are surgically attached to your jawbone. They resemble the natural tooth root and strengthen the bone. Titanium is used because it effectively bonds to the bone and surrounding structures, and it is less likely to cause issues for individuals who have sensitivities or allergies.
An abutment is a small device that links the implant to the custom-made prosthesis that sits on top of it. Your customized restoration might be a dental crown, implant bridge, or implant-retained prosthetic, depending on how many teeth you are without. These are intended to be the same size, shape, and color as your real teeth, producing a perfectly matched smile.
How Long Do They Last?
These tooth replacement restorations may last decades, if not a lifetime if you commit to maintaining and correctly caring for them. There are some criteria and conditions you must meet if you want to maintain them for as long as possible, such as maintaining good oral hygiene and regular dental exams and cleanings every six months. While the implant is meant to last a lifetime, the crown will most likely need to be replaced every 10-15 years. The reason for this is that it is exposed to normal wear and tear, and crowns are not designed to last eternally.
