The Definition of Periodontitis is Given Below

Posted on 12/5/2022 by Todd Jorgenson
The Definition of Periodontitis is Given BelowPeriodontitis is a gum infection that destroys the soft tissues, and if it is not treated, periodontitis can destroy the bone, which gives support to the teeth. During the early stages of periodontitis, the gums can redden, and they may bleed. The leading cause of periodontitis is the bacteria found in the mouth, which causes inflammation; when these bacteria accumulate in the mouth for long, it forms a sticky substance called plaque which finally hardens to tartar.

How Does Periodontitis Affect the General Health

Periodontitis affects the tissue which supports and surrounds the teeth; the signs of this condition are swollen gums, bleeding, foul odor, and swelling. Patients with periodontitis are at a higher risk of getting coronary artery systems. Bacteria found in the gums releases toxins; the harmful toxins travel in the bloodstream, which causes inflammation in the arteries; after that, they can create a blockage. If this blockage increases, there are higher chances of the patient experiencing heart attack and stroke. Periodontitis makes diabetes worse; if the patient has diabetes, the body is already struggling with the immune system.

When the white blood cells try to fight periodontitis, it triggers the blood sugar levels, and thus diabetes becomes unmanageable. In the case of pregnant women, periodontal diseases are prevalent. Hormones in a pregnant woman's body increase the chance of the gums becoming inflamed; thus, the chances of having gum diseases are high. When a pregnant woman has gum issues, the chances of delivering premature babies are very high, and hence their immune systems are fragile to fight other diseases.

Periodontits Affects Asthma

People who have asthma have a weak immune system. Bacteria from periodontal diseases make conditions like asthma worse. Inflammation of the gums can lead to asthma attacks. If a patient has gum disease, oral cancer is hard to notice and treat.
