Teeth Whitening Mesa AZ

Your smile is very often the first thing that people notice about you. Your teeth are a major player in the quality of your smile. Discolored teeth can leave the wrong impression. You may become self-conscious. You may hide your smile behind your hand or refuse to smile at all. While these actions may not seem like much, they can both negatively impact how others perceive you – that you are shy, unenthusiastic, or even unfriendly. Tooth discoloration can be corrected. At East Valley Implant & Periodontal Center, we offer Zoom! Whitening, which can restore the natural bright white of your enamel, helping your smile to appear healthier, and allowing you to leave a positive lasting impression.

What Causes Tooth Discoloration?

Your teeth, while you can’t tell simply by looking at them, are made up of two layers, the enamel (the exterior) and the dentin (the interior). Your enamel is very hard, heavily mineralized, and bright white. The dentin, on the other hand, is more yellow. Over time, your enamel naturally accumulates tiny micro fractures, which allows your teeth to more easily collect pigments, stains, and other debris. There are several factors that can contribute to tooth discoloration:
•  Certain foods and beverages. Many foods and beverages that you consume are a major culprit. Food and drinks like curry, dark berries, tomato-based sauces, coffee, tea, and red wine all contain dark pigments that like to stick to your teeth and cover the natural whiteness of your enamel.
•  Habits such as smoking. Cigarettes, along with other tobacco products, contain thousands of chemicals. Two of these chemicals, tar, and nicotine are responsible for causing deep, unsightly stains. Tar is naturally dark in color. Nicotine, on the other hand, is colorless until it comes into contact with oxygen.
•  Certain types of medications. Some types of allergy, asthma, and blood pressure control medications can lead to tooth discoloration. Other medications, such as tetracycline and doxycycline, are also responsible for darker enamel.
•  Your age. As you get older, your enamel begins to wear thin, which allows the dentin to start showing through.

Over the Counter Whitening

There are plenty of whitening products that are available over the counter at pharmacies and grocery stores. These whitening products consist of toothpaste, strips, gels, and pens. Whitening toothpaste contains abrasives, which are meant to scrub surface stains away. Strips, gels, and pens all contain low levels of bleaching agents. All of these products can work for minor surface stains, they are not very effective on deeper stains, and often don’t allow you to achieve the results you are looking for.

Zoom! Whitening

At East Valley Implant & Periodontal Center, we offer Zoom! Whitening. Zoom! is designed to not only whiten your enamel but your dentin as well. The bleaching agent contains hydrogen peroxide, which is the active ingredient. Hydrogen peroxide is light activated. When exposed to a special light source, it breaks down and enters your enamel. As it does, it grabs hold of the stains on your teeth and eliminates them, restoring your teeth’s bright white color.

Zoom! In Office

Our Zoom! in office whitening procedure is done right in our office, and takes a little over an hour of your time. Before we begin your whitening procedure, we first clean your teeth. Next, we apply a specialized gel onto your gums, which works to protect the sensitive tissue from irritation. We then apply the Zoom! whitening gel to the surfaces of your teeth. We then expose them to the light source. The treatment stays in place for an hour. When you are finished, your teeth will be noticeably whiter and brighter. Zoom! in office whitening can often get your teeth up to 8 shades whiter.

Zoom! Take Home Trays

If you prefer to whiten at home, we also offer Zoom! take home trays. We provide you with custom fit trays, which are made from digital impressions of your mouth. We also provide you with the bleaching agent. Zoom! take home trays designed to be worn for 4 to 8 hours every day. The exact length of your treatment time will vary based on your needs. In just three days, your teeth are noticeably whiter. Zoom! take home treatment can get your teeth up to 6 shades whiter.

Making Your Results Last

While teeth whitening is a highly effective procedure to restore the beauty of your teeth, it is not a permanent solution, and your teeth can become discolored again over time. Typically, the results of properly cared for teeth can last as long as two years. There are ways to make the results last longer:
•  Avoid, or limit, food and drinks that cause stains.
•  Drink a glass of water immediately following heavily pigmented food and drinks.
•  Drink through a straw. In doing so, you bypass the teeth.
•  Quit smoking, or using other tobacco products. If you are having trouble, there are resources available to help.
•  Brush your teeth twice a day, and floss at least once daily.

Benefits of Whitening

Whitening offers several benefits, including:
•  Professional whitening allows you to see better results in a shorter amount of time.
•  Whitening restores the brilliance of your enamel, which can greatly improve the quality of your smile.
•  Whitening can take years off of your appearance.
•  With whiter, brighter teeth, you regain your confidence, and you may quickly find yourself smiling at every opportunity (which can greatly help to improve the impression that you leave with those around you).

Is Teeth Whitening Safe?

Some people wonder if teeth whitening is a safe procedure. Not only is it safe, but it is also highly effective. With our Zoom! in office whitening, we take measures to protect your gum tissue from the whitening agent. Whitening procedures can also sometimes lead to temporary tooth sensitivity. This sensitivity can be managed with specially designed toothpaste. With take-home trays, reducing the amount of time you wear your trays every day can also help to alleviate your sensitivity. It is also recommended that if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, you should wait to have your teeth whitened.

Teeth whitening is an easy, pain-free way to restore the dazzling whiteness of your teeth. With your teeth restored, you can smile confidently once again, and leave an impression that others won’t soon forget.
