Dental Crown Mesa, AZ

When your teeth have suffered damage, they need to be repaired. Not only do damaged teeth affect your smile (and your confidence), they can also affect your oral health, allowing bacteria to enter the tooth and cause severe infections. At East Valley Implant & Periodontal Center, Dr. Todd Jorgenson can provide a structural and cosmetic fix with a dental crown.

Learn About Crown Lengthening

What is a dental crown?

A dental crown is a “cap” that covers the entire visible portion of a weak or damaged tooth. Not only does it provide strength, allowing the tooth to stay rooted in its socket, it also serves a cosmetic purpose, restoring your tooth back to its natural appearance.

Why get a crown?

Dental crowns serve a number of different functions for both your oral health and your appearance:
•  Strengthening a weak or damaged tooth
•  Covering a large filling, when too much of the natural tooth is missing
•  Covering a misshapen or discolored tooth
•  Attaching a bridge
•  Covering screws on a dental implant
•  Covering and protecting a tooth following a root canal
•  Allowing your tooth to stay in place, preventing the consequences of missing teeth, such as shifting and lost bone mass

What are crowns made of?

Crowns can be made out of one of several materials. Each of these materials have their advantages and disadvantages. Metal crowns are the strongest, but have the most disadvantages. For one, they don’t match the color of your natural teeth, and therefore stick out. They are also a problem for people who have allergies to metal. Porcelain fused to metal does match the color of your teeth, with the exception of a faint line that may show through the porcelain. These crowns may also pose a problem for those with metal allergies. The most popular material for dental crowns is porcelain. Porcelain can be designed to perfectly match the color of your natural teeth, so that it blends seamlessly in with your smile. It is relatively strong, able to withstand normal chewing forces and is perfect for anyone, despite what allergies you may have.

Getting Your Crown

The procedure for getting a dental crown takes two visits. During the first visit, Dr. Todd Jorgenson will prepare the tooth. This process involves filing down the tooth so that the crown will fit in both comfortably and naturally. A local anesthetic will be administered which will help to deal with any discomfort. After the tooth is prepared, Dr. Todd Jorgenson will take an impression of your mouth and use a color guide to find the shade that best matches the color of your teeth. Both the impression and the color information are sent to a lab, which will create your crown. This process can take up to two weeks, so you will be provided with a temporary crown to help seal out bacteria and prevent an infection.

Your second visit will occur after your crown is ready. Before having the crown placed, Dr. Todd Jorgenson will check to make sure the tooth fits properly and looks natural. If everything looks good, a special dental cement will be used to affix it permanently in place.

Once your crown is in place, you can go back to eating all of your favorite foods again. Caring for your crown is no different from caring for your natural teeth. With regular brushing and flossing, along with periodic visits to the office for cleanings and exams, your crown should last you many, many years. If you do experience any issues, do not hesitate to call.
