Do Longer Crowns Help Improve Your Oral Health?

Posted on 10/10/2018 by Todd Jorgenson
Do Longer Crowns Help Improve Your Oral Health? There are plenty of things you can do to improve your oral health. Better brushing habits, regular flossing and regular visits to our dental offices are some of the basic.

There are other ways that you can improve your oral health beside the basics. Crown lengthening is something that provides many benefits that include improved oral health.

What Is It
Crown lengthening is a procedure that helps make the upper teeth look longer. People that feel their teeth are too small or that believe they have a gummy smile turn to this procedure to improve the way they look.

Crown lengthening involves the removal of excess gum tissue and possible bone to make the teeth look longer. It is a procedure that a dentist, periodontist or oral surgeon can perform. It is also possible to use crown lengthening to provide more symmetry for the gums and to make sure the gum line is even throughout the mouth.

Improving Oral Health

The most obvious effect of crown lengthening is the improved appearance. But it also does another thing. Crown lengthening exposes more of the tooth. With more of the tooth exposed, it is easier to clean the teeth through brushing and flossing. That can slow down tooth decay and all of the issues that go along with it.

The change in appearance will also help a person want to do more to keep their teeth healthy. If they took the time to endure the crown lengthening procedure, they are usually more willing to follow better oral hygiene habits to continue to show off their smile.

Crown lengthening is not something that everyone needs. Even though it can improve your oral health, that is not the best reason to undergo this procedure. If crown lengthening can help you in other ways, you can also enjoy the oral health benefits.
